Research Abroad Program
CATHALAC has proven to be a Center of excellence in natural resource management, regional cooperation, technological innovation and transfer, risk management, spatial analysis, and climate change research. As such, our Research Abroad Program provides participants with cutting edge technologies, techniques, and approaches to these thematic areas. The Research Abroad Program is directed towards professionals that wish to conduct: research, master degree thesis, professional practice or internship in CATHALAC during a minimum period of one month.
Every year, CATHALAC receives interns from all over the world. Traditional interns of CATHALAC include students from: Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies; University of Toronto; Columbia University; University of Alabama in Huntsville; McGill University, Canada; Göttingen University, Germany; Laval University; and National Universities such as University of Panama, the Technological University, Universidad Latina and others.
Working Environment
The Center is currently composed of a professional staff, programs' area associate experts, volunteers and student interns. The Center is home to 45 full-time personnel from 11 different countries (Belize, Bolivia, El Salvador, United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Chile, Mexico, Panama and Peru). Currently working in the Center are 71% Panamanian scientists and 29% foreign scientists and a diverse selection of recognized national, regional, and international associated consultants. Staff and interns are encouraged to produce real solutions and products to the various environmental challenges in the region.
How to Apply
To participate in the Research Abroad Program, you must fill out the on line application form , attach your research project and your CV. A letter of academic reference is also required and should be sent directly to CATHALAC by the reference person. The application will be revised by specialists from the Applied Research and Development Division, who will determine your incorporation to the program, based on your area of interest, your proposed research project and/or the products you wish to develop during your time in CATHALAC.
Cost
The participant is responsible for all of his or her expenses (including airfare, accommodation, and meals).
Sabbatical Program and Doctoral Research
The Program is directed mainly towards professors and national and international researchers that would like to do their research in CATHALAC during a minimum period of three (3) months. The characteristics of the sabbatical work are agreed between the professor, the Education Division and the Applied Research and Development Division. The participants are responsible for the design and quality of their research, as well as for mentioning and recognizing CATHALAC in their research publications/ results.
Research projects should fall within one or more of CATHALAC’s thematic areas:
• Integrated Watershed Management
• Climate Change
• Environmental GIS Modeling and Analysis
• Risk Management
