Panama City, Panama. February 3, 2011---The Water Center for the Humid Tropics of Latin America and the Caribbean (CATHALAC) and the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAHuntsville) are pleased to offer this summer an eight-week Study Abroad Program in Panama, focusing on Climate Change and Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Program is accredited by UAHuntsville and qualifies for six undergraduate credits through the Earth System Science academic program.
Through professional training, hands-on learning, and a four-week internship research project, students will experience how global climate change influences sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean. Students will have the opportunity to explore firsthand the diverse direct and indirect effects of a changing climate on natural and human systems.
Students will acquire basic knowledge and skills on the science of climate change, analyze historical trends in climatic variability and human vulnerability, and examine the current national and international policy debates on climate change adaptation and mitigation. The course is designed from the perspective of Latin American reality, exploring questions of technology transfer, distribution of risks and benefits, and social marginality between More Developed Countries (MDCs), Less Developed Countries (LDCs), and new Emerging Economies. The course will be instructed in English by CATHALAC’s research scientists and professors from the Department of Atmospheric Science at UAHuntsville.
The acquired knowledge and interests developed by the students will lead to the implementation of group internships at different host institutions in Panama. To facilitate professional collaboration and cross-cultural communication the students will receive Spanish training and will live with host families in Panama City.
Program dates: June 5th - July 31, 2011. Deadline for applications is March 15th, 2011. Further information is available on: www.cathalac.org/study_abroad
